Basic Stamp 1 Starter kit

the stamp 1 starter kit arrived today with 7.5 VDC 1 amp power
supply.

I opened and tried to get going, but I feel frustrated.
First, I have plugged the basic stamp into the super carrier board.
Also, the serial adapter has already been plugged into >> 3 pin j3.
I am confused because there is already serial port on the super
carrier board that I thought I could plug into my ps' serial port.

I have power supply adapter and dont know where to plug it. So I put
it aside.

It appears from the manual that this stamp 1 starter kit cannot use
windows, but dos only.

I now see I am confused and need lots of assitance. Will I find
somebody to walk me through.

Let me know if I should have private emails to avoid embarassment.

Alan,

Forgive us ... our ability to update ALL of our documentation for PBASIC
2.5 and the inclusion of the BS1 into the Windows editor has been
overwhelming. We're doing our best, I promise.

Since I'm in our California office this morning I went to the warehouse
and picked up a BS1 starter kit so I could help you through your
frustrations.

1) The Super Carrier board will work for the BS1 AND the BS2 modules --
the serial connector on the board connects only to the BS2 socket. You
will need to plug your serial cable into the BS1 adapter, then into the
3-pin connector marked J3. Make sure you align the >> marks on the
adapter and the board. A customer reported this week that if backward,
the [Windows] editor will report the BS1 as version 0.0. There is no
BS1 version 0.0 -- the correct version is 1.4.

2) The manual you received does indeed indicate that the BS1 works only
with DOS, but that manual is under revision (a bunch of us are involved
and we're very close). You can, in fact, use our latest Windows editor
with your BS1. To get the very latest (beta) go to this page:

Parallax >> Downloads >> BASIC Stamp Software

http://www.parallax.com/html_pages/downloads/software/software_basic_sta
mp.asp

The online help includes the BS1 -- there are only minor differences
from the printed manual (none having to do with BS1 syntax). Here you
go:

Put these lines at the top of your BS1 programs:

' {$STAMP BS1}
' {$PBASIC 1.0}

... this will let the syntax highlighting work properly for PBASIC 1.0.
And there are icons on the toolbar to add these to your programs easily.

If you use the POT command, the method for scaling is Windows oriented
-- the only help file tells you how to do it (very similar to the DOS
version, but uses Windows tools).

With the Windows editor you get the Memory Map function for the BS1 --
this is a great feature for managing your program space.

I hope this helps and you have fun with your BS1. I started in BASIC
Stamps about 10 years ago with a BS1 kit and I have worked with BASIC
Stamps every day since.

Hi Alan,

I apologize for the confusion.

There are 2 versions of the BS1 Starter Kit:
1) The original version contains a parallel cable (for DOS programming)
2) A more recent version contains a serial cable and BS1 Adapter Board
(For Windows programming)

In order to program the BS1 in the Windows environment, you need #2 or
you may purchase the adapter and serial cable separately at these links:
http://www.parallax.com/detail.asp?product_id=27111
http://www.parallax.com/detail.asp?product_id=800-00003

The following link (which may wrap) shows you the adapter circuit and
displays a photo of connecting the BS1 Serial adapter to a board with a
serial cable.
http://www.parallax.com/html_pages/downloads/software/software_Stamp1_Wi
ndows.asp

The BASIC Stamp 1 Application notes are posted on this page (7th item
from the top) -
http://www.parallax.com/html_pages/downloads/basicstamps/documentation_b
asic_stamp.asp

Here's a close up photo of your Super Carrier Board -
http://www.parallax.com/images/prod_jpg/27130.jpg

Do you see the text that says "9V Battery" in the upper left hand
corner? The power supply plug should be inserted in the jack which is
immediately to the right of this text.

Hopefully that will get you connected properly!

If you continue to have problems, you may call our technical support
dept. directly or work with the group through the forum.

Good luck,

First, don't be embarrassed. No one is born knowing this stuff and many of these
folks have been doing it for years.Try this link
http://www.parallax.com/detail.asp?product_id=BS1-IC , and scroll down to the
bottom of the page, there several useful links. This one shows a click-to
enlarge- photo that shows pretty good detail of the bs1 supercarrier layout.
http://www.parallax.com/images/prod_jpg/27130.jpg You will need a cable to
connect your PC serial port to your supercarrier board. Use a straight through
cable with normally a 9pin male to 9pin female connectors. You can also ues a
USB to serial adapter if that is easier. Looking at the photo in the second
link, above, first make sure the stamp is plugged in properly. Then with you
board oriented as it is in the photo, just above the BS-1 socket is a 9 volt
battery connector. A 9 volt battery plugged in here will power your Stamp.
Again, referring to the photo, just to the right and above the 9 volt battery
connector is the receptacle for the power plug. I believe there is Windows
based software downloadable from the parallax site, but I don't have any
experience with the bs1. Good luck.

Your mentioning below

2) A more recent version contains a serial cable and BS1 Adapter Board
>(For Windows programming)

It seems that I already have the option #2 because I have serial adapter and
serial cable i ordered separately. It comes along with super carrier
board.
Is the Super Carrier board actually BS1 Adapter Board? I am sorry for the
confusion because the link you gave me

http://www.parallax.com/html_pages/downloads/software/software_Stamp1_Wi

does not exist any longer.

Please reply whether my Super Carrier board with serial adapter and serial
cable that I now have is capable of Windows programming. That is all I need
to know. Also, I happen to have old parallel cable. I wonder if I use it,
too for DOS programming.

If you have any questions about my package, please ask because I want to
make things easy for you and myself.
Your short note will be helpful.
Thank You,

Alan

I am so overwhelmed with the replies here. They sound very
encouraging and now realize that that what I have now is capable of
windows programming. (I have super carrier board with serial adapter
and serial cable).

It will take quite some time ( a few days) to get it powered up with
9 volt battery. It is already hooked up to serial port with serial
cable already plugged into serial BS1 adapter via 3 pin connector
marked J3. The Parallax CD is now in the drive. I will look for the
Windows Editor later tomorrow and learn how to load it and use it.
I suppose it is lots better to copy all of the CD onto my E: drive.
C: drive is almost full.

I have seen your name in Nuts and Volts magazine some time ago. This
is my first year subscription. Hope soon I will be able to get my
first project going whatever it is. I will depend on manual or link
for beginners' projects and here.

Thanks for the link:

Erik,

I did not know your reply was here, too. I am very pleased to
learn that the super carrier board is capable of Windows
Programming. I dont think it is the same as MS
Windows. I will see. I will power up and load PARALLAX cd onto hard
drive E: since C: is nearly full.

And see what I can do with Windows Editor.

Thanks for the reply. It appears there is lots communications
support here. Hope I can make it.

I will be around.

Alan

Philip,

Thanks so much for the reply. I am bit confused right now when you
say I can use straight 9 pin serial cable on my super carrier board
to PC serial port for Windows Prgramming. Some other person said I
should connect serial cable to serial BS1 adapter on the board for
Windows Programming. I think I am lost. I may misread his notes.
Hoping trying out either BS1 adapter or straight serial connector
will not blow out.

For now, I will be very careful and try all useful links you list
and then plan in a few days.

I dont know what serial BS1 adapter actually is. I thought it is
converting from parallel to serial. But your reply sounds it is
actually converting from USB to serial via serial BS1 adapter if I
plug USB into the board. Maybe both.

Thank you and others for overwhelming support.
For a moment I dont know where I am. Hope soon I can put tiny stamp
to work.

Alan

several useful links. This one shows a click-to enlarge- photo that
shows pretty good detail of the bs1 supercarrier layout.
http://www.parallax.com/images/prod_jpg/27130.jpg You will need a
cable to connect your PC serial port to your supercarrier board. Use
a straight through cable with normally a 9pin male to 9pin female
connectors. You can also ues a USB to serial adapter if that is
easier. Looking at the photo in the second link, above, first make
sure the stamp is plugged in properly. Then with you board oriented
as it is in the photo, just above the BS-1 socket is a 9 volt
battery connector. A 9 volt battery plugged in here will power your
Stamp. Again, referring to the photo, just to the right and above
the 9 volt battery
> connector is the receptacle for the power plug. I believe there
is Windows based software downloadable from the parallax site, but I
don't have any experience with the bs1. Good luck.

Yes -- in fact every board we've ever made can be programmed with the
latest Windows editor/compiler (version 2.1). For those BS1 boards with
the three-pin programming connection (all except the BS1 project board)
the serial adapter is required. Just insert it between your serial
cable and the board.

Please reply whether my Super Carrier board with serial adapter and
serial cable that I now have is capable of Windows programming. That is
all I need to know. Also, I happen to have old parallel cable. I wonder
if I use it, too for DOS programming.

If you have any questions about my package, please ask because I want to
make things easy for you and myself. Your short note will be helpful.
Thank You,

Alan

I understand you clearly now... I was not clear about your comments re: BS1
project board until I found that it is indeed another BS1 board on Parallax
site. Since I have
(BS1/BS2..etc super carrier board). So I will use the serial adapter on my
board.

I just took glimpse on Windows Editor(s) from the Parallax Cd already on
hard drive. It is going to be loaded shortly into the super carrier board.

Thanks for the reply!

Alan

Have you read through any of the documentation that came with Stamp? Parallax
usually packages some pretty helpful information with their products.
