Greetings!
It may be possible that 'current loop' Serial connections will do, too.
I know that Tandberg terminals we used at the office had them, and they
were connected through up to 75Meters of cabling, to the ND mainframe.
(Running either at 9600 or 19200)
And that was rather shoddy Cat3 cabling...
Later on, we also used 'terminal servers' which slotted into the network
cabinets.
These had 8 serial ports and could be connected to another terminal
server or a TCP port on a server by issuing a simple text command from a
terminal hanging on one of the serial ports.
(A CONNECT xxxxxx something command. The Terminal server was smart
enough to use a DNS server to translate from names to IP)
It was simple enough that most users could do it.
(for those who couldn't we programmed a 'speed key' on the terminal)
I wish we still had some of those to play with...
:-)

You might think about some short haul modems. In a previous life we
had several Intel minis, and would use Telebyte 92 modems to run from
the mini to the terminal. If I remember right, with the baud rate
set down far enough, you could several miles out of them over phone
wire.
I just looked on Ebay, and there are a pair of Black Box modems with
a starting bid of 12.99
Good luck,
Brian

It never ceases to amaze me the varied ideas that come out when a question
is asked of this group. This is yet another promising approach to look
into. Thank you.
