bs2 , sound detection from mixer, to controlllights

im designing a light show for a dj i know, and while thinking which
to incorporate, one of my pcl's , ic's, or my trusty easy to use
forum backed bs2, i deicded the easy controll fo the bs2 would be
better and more afordable too, but now after brain storming the
amount of grueling programing work to make different effects i
thought of taking the amp rec out, which is the level youd plug into
a reciever, and running it into my trusty bs2, now i know its
possible from seeing post on here doing similar things, but could
any one help me find my starting place of designing a system that
could detect things such as bpm, when the bass hits, when certian
frequencys hit,, i want to make this effect just one
possible "function" sitting along side a startrek looking controll
panel, i can wire the entire thing except for the interface
betweenthe mixer, and the light show, and also need a lil help on
the programing end though i think it would besimilar to the
pulshigh / puls low lessons i did in my book, any help? links
