getting started with basic stamps
Hello there, I'm just getting started to learn about BASIC Stamp. I
got SumoBot robot and will be using it for my final year project. My
project is about using this robot to move to the location selected by
the user based on grids. I read that the Stamp does not have a
graphical user interface. How do I start to programme the robot
without using the interface? I need to programme the movements
according to the cordinates from the grids. I hope that what I'm
saying is understandable. Do need some help here as I'm not good in
programming. Thanx.

Thanx for the info. But where do I download the Robotics text? I got
the SumoBot cd-rom. Might it be in that cd-rom as well?

When you're done, you will have the foundations required to solve your
problem. The key is that YOU will solve your problem. As engineers,
that is what we do. It's like going to the gym BEFORE competing in the

1) Code the Sumobot so it 'knows' what Gridpoint it
is on currently.
2) Experiment so you know when you move both
motors forward for a certain time, how far the
'bot' moves.
3) Experiment so you can get predictable 'turns'
from the 'bot'.
4) Have some way to enter a new 'goal' point for
the 'bot' to go to.
5) Write the code for the 'bot' to move forward
for a certain period of time to go to one 'Grid'
point, turn 90 degrees, and go to the next 'grid'
point.
6) Repeat 4 and 5 above, until you reach the new
'goal' point.

From ur reply, I would like to add some points:
1) Code the Sumobot so it 'knows' what Gridpoint it is
on currently. -> and also the location of the
gridpoint it should go.
2) Experiment so you know when you move both motors
forward for a certain time, how far the 'bot' moves.
-> I want the robot to move to the location
(gridpoint) that was selected by the user.
3) Experiment so you can get predictable 'turns' from
the 'bot'. -> I want the robot to know how to turn
back or turn to left or right when there's an obstacle
ahead. In other words, the robot knows the alternative
to go to the location (the robot has a sensor that can
detect obstacle).
My idea is to build an interface of the gridpoints
where the user can use this interface as an input data
to the robot. Lets say there are 9 gridpoints and the
user chooses gridpoint A. Then the robot needs to find
it's way to gridpoint A. If there's obstacle ahead,
then the robot should find an alternative way to go to
gridpoint A. Can I attach a file of an example of my
gridpoints? This way, u might understand more on what
I'm saying. :)
Do reply and thanx a lot!!
Cheers.

to achieve.
The points I gave are things you need to
program the 'bot' to do. There is a lot
of help for this in the 'Robotics' text --
but you'll have to program the 'bot' yourself.
