There are boards today which have some additional circuitry to
allow to connect a BS1 to a serial interface, but the standard
super carrier is still using the parallel port (using J3, see
schematic at
http://www.parallax.com/dl/docs/prod/schem/supercarrierbd.pdf)
for BS1 as far as I know.
