Getting started with Basic Stamp

Hello all, I've finally got a project that would be great use for
basic stamp, however I've never used microcontrollers in any of my
electronic circuits before.
So I was wondering what the best way to start learning about the Basic
stamp was. I've been thinking about getting the starter kit from
Parallax for $169. I was wonder what are the thoughts from people who
have gotten the kit, and if it fulfilled your expectations. If not,
then what would you suggest as an alternative way of learning.
Thanks in advance.

And the BS2 is a very nice starter micro.
It includes a prototyping area for trying
out circuits, and for doing the labs
Parallax has available.
There are other ways of getting in to
microprocessors, but Parallax has the
most complete and simple package.

the Stamp is a great way to go and well worth the money.
It sounds like you have previous electronics experience, and may have a
stash of components and so. If you are low on cash, you can also just buy a
Stamp and do a lot with basic components, i.e. LEDs, transisitors, caps,
infrared stuff scrounged out of equipment, etc. The OEM's have an onboard
voltage regolator and DB-9 connector and plug into a breadboard nicely. This
is a cheaper option to get into it if you don't have a lot of cash and
already have some stuff. Me, I'm a low budget scrounger, in case you
couldn't tell ;-).
The kits are great, especially for those that don't have any electronics
stuff laying around the house. It also makes sure you have all the parts to
do all the experiments.
FWIW,
Jonathan

Radio Shack sells the What's a Microntroller? BASIC Stamp Kit for
$79.99 that includes a BS2 Homework board, the book What's a
Micontroller, some electronic parts and a RS232 serial cable for
programming the board from a PC. This kit is very similar to the
starter kit - except on the Homework board the BS2 is a surface mount
chip and it's soldered to the board. The BS2 Homework boards acts and
programs just the same as the Board of Education board, but it's half
the price.
