hi all ... another question.

electronic toys being sold in stores, especially around the
holidays... what inexpensive chips/boards are they using as the
brains? what company supplies them? i want to replace a toy with my
own instructions.

thanks

If you google 'Barbie' or 'GIJoe', you should come
up with a link -- one year, people swapped their
voice chips, so Barbie was saying GIJoe things
and vice-versa. That should get you started.
    These articles included part numbers.

    Tom -

The answer to your question is probably only limited by the number of toys that
are available. One popular platform from what I understand is the Hitachi H8
processor. Most processors used in that sort of application are programmable
ONE-TIME ONLY. This is how they're able to keep the per processor costs down.

There are so many choices it would not be practical to list them here.
Most hobbyists are familiar with popular 8-bit micros from companies
like Microchip, Atmel, Ubicom, etc., yet there are still a large number
of very low cost 4-bit microcontrollers that are used every day in
    high-volume, low-cost applications like toys.

Best you study the entire circuit of the device you intend to take
control off. It's certainly possible -- BASIC Stamp users have "taken
contol" of toys of all types (often turning them into robots). A Google
search will turn up some interesting results.

    thanks everyone for your input.

    (1) would it help if i showed a photo of the toy's board up close?
or is it irrelevant because you have to bypass the enitre board
    anyways?

    (2) is there a website that shows how to bypass all this and program
your customized instructions? what google words would i even begin
    with?

    (3) do certain toy motors require certain chips or is it more of a
instructions capacity issue when choosing chips.

    thanks again guys

i'd probably be better off taking over the toy with a stamp because i
can get more instructions and activity right? that's probably where
i need to go with it. any website specifically showing how to
    implement a stamp into a toy's board?

    thanks

    called a YAK BAK......

you speak into it, it could record about 15 sec of voice, then hit a diff

Tom: I have a webpage for converting a mars rover toy to stamp control.
    http://mntnweb.com/hobby/Rover/rover.htm
You may be able to get some ideas from the webpage.

    hi stampers

I'm looking for a chip or a device that can decode the serial data that a
serial display can read , and print it to a printer...

I suspect this chip is what you may be seeking. Here is the main page of E-Labs
web site: http://www.elabinc.com/ . Punch up EDExx IC Family from the left-side
menu. Then scroll down to the EDE1400 Serial to Parallel chip. This will permit
the ordinary serial data to be displayed on a parallel interface printer. Just
be careful of any control codes that may be coming across the serial line.

    Bruce Bates
