Automotive backup warning beeper

Hi All,

I want to build myself a backup warning beeper for my car using a
Basic Stamp. I know these things are offered on newer vehicles.
Basically it would sound a loud beep in the event of an impending
collision with an object, wall, child, person or whatever.

I don't think it would be too difficult to build one but I'm
wondering what type of sensors the automotive industry is using for
theirs.

I plan on mounting the entire unit inside the rear bumper and place
the sensors (2 to 4 of them) in such a way as to get full coverage
behind the vehicle (no blind spots).

Also any recommendations on the tone generator. It will have to be
LOUD. The whole thing will tap into the 12v bus available on the
vehicle.

Thanks.

-Dave

    Dave -

I've seen both ultrasonic (sonar) and I/R (infrared) used by auto manufacturers.
There are also third party units which aren't all that expensive when you
consider the power conditioning, weatherproofing, and possible liability
    involved.

Halted electronics has what you are looking for, I think.
    www.halted.com sro;; down the specials page I t's a a EDP Mini-S sonar
    sensor www.edpcompany.com cost is $9.95

The range of these things is not adjustable, but they claim triggering at 5-7
ft, which might be perfect. You will have to build a housing for it.
