Supplying/controlling more current with I/O pin

Hi,
We want to control the movement of thick Flexinol wires with our
Homework Board. We learned that the Homework Board can provide upto
about 37mA @ 5V. The wire that we are using requires about 1750mA to
a\be activated. It works fine even with 1.5V batteries. We want to
know how to supply/control more current with I/O pin. Thank you in
advance.

For a "no brainer" soulution, get a logic level mosfet. IRL520.

www.glitchbuster.com is a good source (inexpensive shipping).

The Mosfet will be used to supply a ground to activate your component.

Component has volatage supplied to one side. The ground side of the component
goes to the mosfet Drain pin.

    Mosfet Source pin to ground

Mosfet gate pin goes to your stamp I/O pin. Also connect 1 meg resistor from
    the mosfet gate to ground.

Supply logic 1 (5v) to the gate and your device should turn on.

This is not the "cheapest" solution, but implemented for less than $2.00

The mosfet will handle 10 amps (much more than you require) and will easily
    handle the job.
