program language

Can I program basic stamps in small c ? I was also wondering if I could use
small c or pbasic to program the pic 16F84 with a pic programmer I bought off of
ebay. The pic programmer connects through a serial port and has 2 separate
places to program EEPROM and a pic. It had a link to download the IC-Prog
software but I havent tried it yet. Does anybody have any answers or suggestions
?

With all due respect, BASIC Stamps program in BASIC. Period. If you
can live with a C-like language, we offer a product called the Javelin
    Stamp that programs in Java.

    Your PIC-related questions are off-topic.

Let me be the first to say:

    1. No, you can't program the Basic Stamp in anything
but PBasic 2.0, or PBasic 2.5. It's a nice, simple
language which tokenizes well and makes very good
use of the Stamp's resources. Sorry, but that's
the way it is. The Parallax IDE is free, after
    all.

    2. CCS-Inc has a nice 'C' compiler for the PIC.
Go see them if you're really serious about 'C'.

    3. This forum is for the Basic Stamp, flavors
    1, 2, 2p, 2sx, etc. It's not really a generic
PIC forum. Having said that, there's LOTS of
PIC support resources out there. Good luck.

But you can program the basic stamp with java. I like pbasic very much but I
wanted to try something different. I noticed other microcontrollers that
mentioned small c and I have heard people on here mention they programmed their
    basic stamp in c.

No, you CAN NOT program the BASIC Stamp in Java -- you can only program
the Javelin Stamp in Java. While similar beasts, they are different
platforms. Please trust me on that; I work with both.

    Kyle:

Yes, you can program the Javelin Stamp in
Java. It costs a little more, and you
only get a single Java thread, but it works
    well.

I really like the Java debugger environment
they use, also. It lets you single step your
    Java code.

So if you want an alternative, you can use
    the Javelin in Java.

You have three language choices for BASIC Stamps: PBASIC 1.0 (BS1 only),
PBASIC 2.0 (BS2 family only), and PBASIC 2.5 (BS2 family only). You are
not "hearing" correctly -- there are no language providers for the BASIC
Stamp except Parallax. There are a few companies who have copied the
PBASIC language (kind of) and make compilers for PICs and other micros.
Those compilers will not work with the BASIC Stamp.

If you don't like BASIC, you can use Java -- but only on the Javelin
Stamp. Unless you decide to go the compiler route, but then, we can't
    help you.

Sorry again, Kyle, the BS2 is a Basic Stamp.
It is NOT a 'PIC', although it does have a PIC
inside it. It's only programmable in PBasic.
    No other languages.

The Javelin Stamp has a Ubicom SX chip inside of
it, but it is only programmable in Java.
It's not a Basic Stamp. The only thing they
have in common is the 24-pin wide-dip form
factor, and their pin-outs are identical.

PIC Basic is for programming native PIC chips.
You might try one of the other Yahoo groups
    for PIC processors.

Well thanks for everyone's help. I was asking about it because on other
microcontrollers you can program them in different languages and I heard that
the Pic Basic Pro Compiler was compatible with the BS2. I might look into the
Javelin stamp later for now I have some money invested in other projects. I like
pbasic alot and I will keep on using it. Anyway thanks for all of the responses.

I should probably just let this go, but oh, well:

The PIC Basic Pro compiler's 'source code' -- the
text you write -- is close to the PBasic source
code. This means if you wrote a program for the
BS2, converting that program to run under PIC Basic
on some other PIC chip would not be difficult.
That's what the vendor means when he says they're
'compatible'. But you can't download the PIC
Basic output into a BS2. Really, he should say
    they are 'source code compatible'.

What you've been asking about is 'object code
compatible', where you can download the compiler's
output ('object code') into a PIC or a BS2.
And that really can't be done. PIC Basic is
NOT object code compatible with the BS2.

Parallax has created a very nice standard in their
PBasic for their modules. It's simple, it has
several nice commands (SERIN, SEROUT, SHIFTIN,
SHIFTOUT, PULSIN, FREQOUT) which come with the
language and make the module very easy to apply.
That's why other vendors claim compatibility.
