Localization of Mobile Robots

I just happened to run across this web page about the localization of mobile
robots. I've always been interested in the concept of "mapping" for
localization and position determination, but using the system shown
below, that is almost unnecessary.

Don't get bogged down in the math, as later in the article, a descriptive
piece shows essentially how it operates:

Odd as it may seem, I can visualize these scurrying little robotic
creatures with a lead scout stopping their action, taking a "fix", and then
returning to the business at hand. It wouldn't surprise me one bit if this or a
similar system were to be used in the future for planetary surface exploration
if the atmosphere would support the appropriate propagation of sound waves.

One of the other Stamp List members is going to set up the extended Kalman
Filter
in Matlab to see how accurate it appears to be. We'll try to post any results
when they become available.
