How to use Vin?

I'm new to Basic Stamping using the Homework Board. How do I use the
Vin header. Do I plug a battery in there and ground it in Vss? Or
does anything connected in there get its power from the Homework
Board's battery? Perhaps someone could describe a typical connection
using it?
Thanks a bunch.
