Radio Shack and the Basic 2 Kit

I checked the Radio Shack site and was led to four stores in the
Columbus, Ohio, area which were supposed to have the Parallax Basic 2
kit. None of them had it, and none of them seemed to know about it.
This is FYI.

Unfortunately for Radio Shack, that's normal. The last I had heard,
the kits were only available as an ordered from the website, or their
800#. Double check the Parallax site, it might know of a local, to
you, store, or distributor. Both Mouser Electronics, (The last time I
saw their printed catalog), and Jameco carry them. Of the two I
recommend Jameco.
The thing to do, to convince those individuals at the Radio Shack
store, is to have them pull up the webpage, that you visited. If that
doesn't work, then I suggest the mail order option.

found them when I searched on "Parallax".
Apparently, the full kit is called
"What's a Microcontroller" -- so asking for
a BS2 or Stamp or even 'Basic 2 Kit' probably
wouldn't mean anything to the salesman.
Don't try searching their website on "What",
it won't find anything.

would recommend calling the stores on the list we provide in advance to your

parallax info indicates that the RadioShack stores stock only 2
items per store (I wouldn't hold my breath to check every month).
If learning microcontrollers is what you want, then the kit is a
good value. But you'll have to print out the Basic Stamp language
reference (it's hefty long, trust me) or just read it online as a
PDF file.
If you start wanting to play with the other stamp modules, you'll
have to get a BoE board where the modules are socketed.
I'm having plenty of fun with my kit.

I just went through the same thing. The web site said 4 RS's in my
area had them, none of them actually did. I wound up ordering it from
the web site, I had it in 3 days.
After duty and exchange, it's not quite worth it for us canucks....

Partner I think it applies to all of the Radio Shack stores in the
entire world, that they have spread to. I had that problem with
something else, not the Basic Stamp units. Naturally I concluded
thusly that the person wasn't even capable of being there, I'll leave
out what I really thought, and took my business elsewhere. The store
closed, soon after. Besides for everything that Parallax makes, I'd
rather buy direct, unless heaven forbid, the distributors I mentioned
are in fact selling cheaper, this also includes the good people at
Mondo-Tronics.

I too have learned how frustrating it is to find Radio Shack's Basic Stamp
version. I've checked the RS web sites around home and some planned
destinations in Kansas City and Tulsa without any place showing them as
being available. When I got to Tulsa a couple of days ago I stopped by one
of the stores anyway and asked the salesman. He showed me to the area where
some of their other educational kits were and then told me they didn't have
anything like that. He was curious about what the microcontrollers were so I
explained what I knew about the Basic Stamps. While I was describing them I
happened to notice a book a little further over and on a lower shelf with
blue cloud like image and realized it was what I wanted. So, just because
the web site says their unavailable and the salespeople say they don't have
them, it doesn't mean their not out there. You have to go there and look,
but then maybe I just got the last one in the country.
One other thing I've noticed at Radio Shacks over the last couple of weeks
are pricing inconsistencies. I was interested in one of their logic probes
and almost paid $17 for one in Springfield MO. I had a business trip to St.
Louis last week and found the same logic probe marked down to $4.95. I
stopped back at the Springfield store earlier this week and they still had
them for $17. When I asked about the price difference they scanned it and
said sure enough it's on sale for $4.95. I went back to that same store
again yesterday and they are still marked at $17.
Anyway, this support group is a big reason I decided to jump into learning
about the Basic Stamp. I am encouraged by the responsiveness this group has
to help someone that is struggling whether their a professional or hobbiest.
Keep up the good work.
Vince
big (both companies wanted to make sure it would all work out). Things
are indeed looking good, so we're optimistic [though there is no
guarantee] that we'll become a regular Radio Shack product -- when that
happens, RS employees will get training and the awareness will go up.
Sorry for any troubles you've had; and I understand completely. I went
into an Irving (Texas) Radio Shack and asked for the "BASIC Stamp
Starter Kit" to which a nice young lady replied, "Shouldn't you go to
the Post Office for that?" I went back the next day (when their
shipment was unpacked) and explained the product to the manager.

Surround Sound systems. Since that's what I actually teach for a living, we
offered to do some familiarization seminars for the larger RS stores. From a
meeting with Radio Shack corporate last year (then the Tandy Corp), we
learned the average life-span of a RS sales clerk was only 11 months, so
paying to train them was a big issue.
I always take a catalog number with me when I want something from a local
"Shack". Unfortunately, if you just want a battery or a cell phone, you can
get a lot of help. Anything else is a Smile-shoot. Just don't expect ANY
technical support from your local RS store. Consider it a success if the
clerk can point to the proper shelf and the product is actually there.

Shack was pouring over with enthusiasm about the kit. He had bought
one himself and was trying to sell me on the great value. (I don't
need convincing--Andy's book is worth its weight in express mail
stamps!) I got their remaining one as a present for a nephew. Last
week I saw that they had at least one more in stock.
