I am trying to get my laptop to work with a 2sx. The laptop only has
usb and parallel ports. I bought a usb to serial adaptor that works
with my Palm 111c fine but not the stamp. Any ideas?

Not all USB adapters are created equal. We have had consistent good
luck with Bafo adapters, but non with anyone else.

Does your adaptor comply with the RS232 100% ?
    Make sure of that.

The adapter may not have all the pins of the RS232 serial port.
Or, the voltage that the BS outputs, may not be sufficient for that adaptor.

Maybe another problem. Check your voltage levels.

I bought one after trying a Belkin on my new Sony machine. The Belkin
didn't work on any of my serial critters (Garmin 12/Topo!, Casio Watch
IR interface, Yaesu VX5 ham radio, and the Basic Stamp). The BAFO
    works on all of them.

I've never hear do a Bafo adapter. I use the Keyspan 4
port which works just fine with the BS2 and
    BX24(netmedia microcontroller).

    Hi Stampers,

can anyone tell me the safest Hardware/Software way to program the stamp
over a USB-Port? My new Notebook has no com anymore. I am using Windows XP
    home edition.

    Thanks in advance,

    Uli

Safest: purchase the BAFO USB to 232 converter
from the Parallax web-site. Not all USB-232
converters are created equal. The BAFO unit has
had no complains, nor have the KeySpan 19W units.

Stay away from "PDA" USB-232 converters, they
rarely have all the control lines needed.
Personally, I don't like Belkin, but I've had
    issues with them.

    This is for Jon Williams.

Is it possible to connect an adapter to the DB9 connector on the BOE so that
a USB cable can be used to connect the Stamp to the computer?

Doesn't the BAFO adapter do this?

I don't know of any USB adapters that exist inside a "shell" as you
descript that change a DB-9 to a USB connection. Most have an attached
cable. That said, I've never had need for what you're asking so I
    haven't looked for it.

Yes, what you need is the Keyspan USA-19QW. I usually don't connect it
directly to the DB9 connector because they both have stand-offs; I usually
use a strait-thru male to female DB9 cable to connect the USB to serial
    dongle to the robot.

I think the BAFO has a female serial connector. I need one with a male end
to plug into the BOE DB9 - but maybe I could use a gender-changer.

I have a BAFO. It has a male DB9 (male pins) on one end of the module
and a USB-B connector (the small style like on a printer) on the other
end. A USB A to B cable is included in the BAFO package.

    http://www.parallax.com/detail.asp?product_id=800-00030

You will have to remove the hex standoffs on the BOE DB9 in order to
use it with the BAFO. I have done this with one of the other Parallax
project boards. Removing the hex fittings won't disturb the connector
assembly mounting because the connector and metal shell are retained
    independently of the standoffs.

Alternatively, you could use a standard serial cable (DB9 female to
DB9 male) between the BAFO and the BOE. The BAFO provides exactly what
you would see on a PC back panel serial connector.

This adapter works with all of my serial devices on my new PC which
has no serial ports. The Belkin adapter failed miserably.

The 2 BAFO's I got had 9-pin Male connectors on them. One came from
    Parallax.
