RS 485 Communication

Hi,
I don't have much experience using RS 485 communication but I wanted
to ask some questions. I have a device, it's very similar to a
laptop with no screen, that uses RS 485 to communicate. Is it
possible to just hook up a SN 75176 to the TX line and simply read
the data that it's sending? Parallax has a data sheet on this chip
and I wanted to know if this is a good starting point or is it much
more involved? Also, is there such a thing as proprietary RS 485
communication?
Thanks,
Chris
