That's the only source that I'm aware of (but I haven't searched
elsewhere).
Maybe others have found multiple sources - hopefully they'll offer the
sources.

That's great! Now where do I get iButtons? I've only been able to get
them as samples from Maxim/Dallas.

watch battery. The similarity ends there. iButtons are tiny
little sefl contained devices that perform a variety of
functions, depending on the one you use.
They range from simple 'keys' (each has a guarenteed unique
ID) to temp probes, temp loggers, clocks, memory, they even
have a few java ibuttons.
iButtons all communicate through Dallas Semiconducter's 'one
wire' interface, which is really two wires, but one's ground
so... (it's proprietary)
They are used in a variety of ways, inlcuding car keys (go
to italy), bus token (brazil) and a number of inovative
ways. We used them in the army for temperature logging of
serums while they were transported. We used the iButton that
logged the temperatture every five minutes. When the
shipment arrives, we'd read the iButton and know if the
container ever got out of it's allowed temperature range.
Several of the stamps support communications with the
ibuttons.
the Java Buttons are a lot of fun. At Java One a few years
back, they gave everyone a java ring and programed them so
you could walk up to one of the drink machines and it would
spit out you favorite flavor just by touching the ring to
the blue dot.
pretty cool.

I'm afraid I went the cheap route when venturing into the Stamp realm and I
only picked up a BS2. Do I need the SX or P or the Javalin (that's the Java
one isn't it?).
Thanks
Steve

Subject: RE: [basicstamps] Parallax - Blue Dot Receptor Cable
an I button is a little device that looks like a very large
watch battery.
At Java One a few years
back, they gave everyone a java ring and programed them so
you could walk up to one of the drink machines and it would
spit out you favorite flavor just by touching the ring to
the blue dot.
pretty cool.

that will be your easiest route (those Stamps offer other cool features
too). To you other Stamps will require a serial to 1-Wire protocol
converter.
