I picked up a couple of these inexpensive lasers and I was wondering
if there is any way to measure distance with them?

Thanks

Yes there is (I think). and this site explains it somwhere
www.members.misty.com/don/lasersam.htm . It is a huge site so it may take a
bit of looking to find it, but I saw it there.

I don't know how to make a laser range finder other than optically
through use of a video camera. (I can explain more if anyone is
interested) However, I love the project idea that the writer presented.
If anyone knows how to do this please respond.

Also, does anyone know of a source for low cost ($5 or so) laser diodes
including the few support components that often come on the small
attached PCB? I was able to disassemble a cheap laser pointer from
Harbor Freight Tools (1/2 off for $5) but they no longer carry them.

    Regards,
    Chris Dundorf

    Hello from Gregg C Levine
One of the mail order shops where I buy most of my ICs, carry Laser
parts by the container load. They are also dealer for Basic Stamps, as
it happens. Jameco does. Go to www.jameco.com and work from there.

    Gregg and Other,

I went to Jameco.com, great overall site, but the laser diode and diode
driver cost $20, plus I'd then need to mount it in a housing, not a big
deal but an extra step. If any one else knows a good source for low cost
laser pointers than can be disassembled then used in a Stamp project
    please let me (us) know.

    Thanks,
    Chris Dundorf

If you need less than 5mw laser you can try taking apart a laser level.
they work on just 3V. as an value added bonus you get the beam splitter
that gives you a dot or red line. you can find them for around $10 at
    Harbor Freight Tools http://www.harborfreight.com/ Item # 54050-2VGA

mi-lasers.com has some laser diode modules for $19 - diode module, driver,
    cavetating lens and housing.

I've bought diode modules on ebay at 3 for $20 .
