a little posting etiquette

Greetings all -

Just a quick note on some posting etiquette, as I've really noticed one
annoying practice (or just an honest mistake):

<rant>
There is NO NEED to copy the *entire* digest when replying to a post! To
avoid this, don't just hit reply to a digest - start a new message and then
copy the small bits of pertinent info that you need to reference.

If everyone makes a conscious effort to do this, it would make the digests
so much more readable.
</rant>

Thanks for listening and my apologies to those who don't read in digest format.

I agree with Gary, as long as we all keep adding our 2-cents to the top of
the old message, it doesn't take any more time to read the question and a
quick history is just a scroll down. What gets confusing is when someone
adds to the bottom of the old message. Then I have to actually "think".

    I entirely agree with Jonny.

Some of us get emailed summaries of the posts,
and if people don't 'clip' the bottom of the
reply chain, then the emails get REALLY long,
    for no purpose.

Also, it is nice to add your reply to the TOP
of the reply chain, so it is easily viewed
quickly. Also, it is nice to use the 'REPLY'
button, as this maintains the topic chain.

I can't count the number of times I replied to
someone I assumed no-one had replied to, because
the 'replies' area at the bottom had no links,
only to find that there were several replys,
    just no links.

    Greetings all -

Didn't mean to ruffle any feathers, but I think my point *may* have been
mis-taken (or I just didn't explain myself well enough).

My intention was not to discourage copying and posting of message parts
which can Absolutely help when reading a reply or follow-up.

My intention was to discourage copying the ENTIRE digest in one email
(which can be 20-30 messages on some occasions). Recently I have seen a
few digests sent that have had 2 or more complete, previous digests
contained within them. That just doesn't make any sense....if I want to
reread the entire thing (again) I can either a. check my garbage bin or
    b. go online and read the whole thread there.

    Best regards,

    jonny slumpff

I tend to post my replies to various 'parts' of the
    message like this.

This way I still maintain a reasonablly easy to read
reply, but I can quote various sections, and reply to
    them seperately.

It is good etiquette to remove the (sometimes multiple) unsubscribe stuff from
the end of the postings, as another block of them
will be tacked on by the listserver.

I find it is good manners to snip everthing in a large block that is
    convienient and not on topic.

Oddly, 6 replies to this topic have left huge chunks of stuff that do
not relate to the question at hand.

Also, if you are replying to one or two questions in a post of
multiple questions and answers, it is also good from to snip large
chunks of those old replies AND to alter the subject line to indicate
a change in direction of the post.

    Hi

Because of finding a lot of interesting answers I read a

lot of the Basic Stamp- e-mails !!

It helps much to find questions AND answers in

    the some post.

as long as we all keep adding the NEW post to the top of
the old message, it doesn't take any more time to read it all.

What gets confusing is when someone adds it to the bottom

or between the old message. Heinz
