Newbie needs help with MACBS2 and BOEBOT

I am just getting started with BASIC Stamps. I bought the BOEBOT
from Parallax, with a BS2. I am using a iMac 800 running Panther
and have downloaded the MACBS2 program. I bought a Keyspan
USA-19HS USB/Serial adapter and downloaded the current 1.8
version of the driver software.
After connecting the Keyspan DB9 connector directly to my
BOEBOT, every time I try the "ID Stamp" function I get the error
message;
"Error: Basic Stamp II detected but not responding... check power
supply".
I have checked that I have fresh batteries, properly
oriented in the battery pack.
Has anyone else had success with a similar setup? Is there some
configuration settings I need to make somewhere? I am getting
frustrated and would appreciate any advice you might have!
Thanks!

I've always used. This module should
properly implement the DTR pin support
needed to reset the BS2.
DTR is wired to the 'ATN' pin of the BS2, and
is used to reset the BS2 preparatory for
programming.
The 'other' handshake is a hard-wired RTS to
DSR (DB-9 pins 6 and 7) loopback, used by the
IDE to verify the cable is connected.
I'm amazed this is having problems.
Toshiba Laptops have problems with their
serial port FIFO settings -- perhaps this
adapter has a 'low-speed' setting which
would minimize data stored in the adapter.
Use the Keyspan 'Serial Assistant' to try
to check some of the settings.
