Beginner question: Proximity Problem

First a hello to everyone. I have lurked on this list for quite some time
and now I have an idea to do something, but I have little experience with
BS. I purchased the BOE and BS2 stamp almost a year ago, but just now
started to try and learn its capabilities.

My question or problem:

I want to be able to have two devices, probably robots of some sort that
will have some type of system ( Proximity or Positioning system ) that
will allow each autonomous robot to know exactly where the other bot is
located. If that is too much to try to bite off as a project I would like
to at least know the distance of separation of the two bots.

Please tell me if this is feasible or if I am trying to do too much. I
dont want to use GPS, because the bots will more than likely be indoors
and not be able to acquire a signal.

Thanks in advance

Daryl

How about putting a tone on each robot and have a microphone pickup tuned
and filtered to that tone on the other robot. If you set it up binauraly
(like humans with two 'ears) it will know the direction of the other robot
and the intensity once position is acquired will indicate distance. The
tone does not have to be audible to humans.

you might want to look into laser Range finders and incorporating them with
the BS2. sounds like a fun project. good luck.

The tone idea doesnt sound too bad (no pun intended). I wonder
how accurate the distance calculation would be? Also how would this work
in a building with different rooms ( echoing comes to mind ). Plus I
would like to know if the two bots become more than 50 feet apart.

The laser Range finder idea would pick up other objects, right? Then I
would have a problem identifying the other bot. These two bots will
be working in tandem, in fact the one is the controlling bot and the other
is just there to assist the controlling bot.

I was thinking that maybe I could use RF in some way where the master bot
emits a signal with the time encoded in that signal that stands for the
time that the signal was sent. Then when the other bot receives the
signal he can calculate how long it took him to receive the signal. Of
course this would also require that both bots have some sort of internal
clock and that they would synchronize their time when they are first
    brought online. Sound feasible?

    Thanks for the ideas...
