We are using BS2P's on a proprietary board for industrial process
controllers. I am looking for anyone who has linked a cellphone
modem to their BS2p. The goal is to use the cellphone in remote
locations where landlines are not available to transmit a fair volume
    of data (32k bytes)on a routine basis

    Any insights would be appreciated

    What about this?

    http://cellphones-accessories.com/98smar20conk.html

I once created an BASIC Stamp-based device and had a very tough time
finding a cell-phone interface (ultimately gave up) -- but that was a
few years ago and with the proliferation of cell phones, perhaps and
cell-phone modem interface will be easier to find.

    How long is the string?

    Hey chuck,

Its not how long they are its how many the phone transmits at one
time. A cellphone can generate Hundrends of strings per second In addition
those strings can form strings of there own or "Subroutines" due their
Superior programming language. A lot of the strings are garbage but most of
the important ones is the Phone Stating which Subroutine was executed and
if there was an error, or if the phone has lost a paging channel. keep in
mind that phones are controlled by software. the base station controls the
phone and the phone is always looking for sectors and P/N's. Besides the
fact that the phone is always looking for the stronger signal it also has
to process GPS information, paging channel access, and traffic channel
access. this is why i said its almost impossible for the stamp to handle
the payload of a cell phone. But in a civilized answer to your question a
string could be a few bytes to a couple KB in size. Keep in mind these are
program executed instructions not simple text.
For instance i seen this string many times:

    MP4codec.c; delay variable: phone delayed for 18789 sec; mp4codec Failure;
    request repositioning;

I've been watching this thread as its of interest for my data
logging when I don't want to use point to point radios.

I know from previous work that all you really need is a modem that
can use a cell phone. You don't need the stamp to talk directly to
the cell phone. The stamp will be talking to the modem's serial port
and the modem will take care of the cell phone stuff. See
www.ositech.com for something close to what you need. Their product
is in PCMIA format but you can get an adapter to give your stamp (or
desktop PC )access to the serial connector.

Once you have a serial port for the stamp to talk to, you'll be
able to do what you want.

An alternate is to use radio modems from the remote site where the
stamp is back to a 'semi-remote' site that has a phone line. I've
used the Dycor units out to 10 miles with a 10"-12" antenna and
double that with a directional antenna. They are very stamp friendly.
    See www.freewave.com

Contact me by direct e-mail if any of this is close to what you're
    doing.

    Cheers,

    Tom Sisk

Hi - I am looking for a cost effective way to send an SMS message from a
    stamp.
There are some cell modem devices but cost a lot more than a typical cell
    phone.
Perhaps someone is aware of how an SMS call can be initiated from a cell
    phone, using
say a serial connection from the stamp.

    Look at www.enfora.com

    Product: SA-G or SA-GL (cheaper)

They make a serial GSM/GPRS modem that will do voice, SMS, PPP, CSD,
and also has a PAD mode to send/receive UDP or TCP packets. It will
easily interface with a low power micro that has a serial interface.
