A just bought a BS2 stamp last week and have hooked it up. I am an Oracle
dba with 8 years experience so i thought i could handle this.

I am having all srts of problems. First of all i run the identifier menu
item, it says it can't communicate with Com1 (which the mouse is on, so i
figure the port is just being used) and that a Basic Stamp version1 is on
Com2.
I write the on-liner in the manual 'DEBUG "Hello world", save it and go to
run it. I echos like the first 5 or 6 characters and locks up. i hit the
reset button again after 1 minute or so and it writes some more.
I close the debug window and try to id the chip again. This time it says
'Hardware not found'. On Com2 it shows there is nothing hooked up.

Whats up with this? I have spend some time with the manula, but this kind
of stuff i did not even think i would need to read about.
I am doing something very wrong and would appreciate some help. Thanks

Did you plug your BS2 into a BOE? Or did you
build your own board? What are you using for
a power supply? What are its ratings?
(Vdc, current) What are you using for a
    linear regulator?

How have you wired your serial cable?

All very helpful questions we need answered
    to be able to help.

Is there something else (like an ActiveSync program) working with your
ports? And your Oracle experience won't get in the way -- I worked with
a class full of 12-year-old this summer and they were able to handle it!

    Thanks for the reply Allen.
I bought the BOE board and use it with a 9Vdc battery.
I am using a serial cable from my KMV switch. It's just striaght
wired as far as i can tell. I can use it as an extension cord for my
mouse, so i think the cable is good.

Jon, thanks for your reply. No i am not running any thing else that
    would affect the port operation.
I actually expect my Oracle experience to help me - i am trying to
gather output from some lab equipment, and i think i have half the
knowledge i need (ie: the database side). I am trying to get some
help from people who are familiar with this little chip so i can
continue. I hope to meet some such people.
    Thanks again!

    Hi,

Do you have a COM 2 on your PC?

The Stamp could work better if you use that.

    Regards,

    Klaus

A big part of the Stamp's success has been that -- for the most part --
you just plug it in and it works. That said, all PCs are not equal and
from time-to-time we run into a sticky one. It's usually the serial
port (not meeting "normal" RS-232 standards). You might try setting
your comm port FIFO settings to minimum values; this usually fixes
    finicky ports.

I was just kidding about the Oracle stuff ... sometimes people with
advanced programming skills get wrapped around the axle with a simple
    embedded microcontroller.
