My favourite is the TC35i GSM Terminal from Siemens Wireless Modules.
Sending a message from a BASIC Stamp is as straightforward as this:
SMSSendMessage: SEROUT 0,16780,["AT+CMGS=", 34, "+441234567890", 34, 13]
SERIN 1,16780,2000,SMSSendMessageFailed,[WAIT ("> ")]
SEROUT 0,16780,["Hello World!", 26]
SERIN 1,16780,10000,SMSSendMessageFailed,[WAIT ("+CMGS:")]
RETURN
SMSSendMessageFailed:
GOTO SMSSendMessage

If you're operating in the US, you will need the MC45 Terminal, which is
TriBand. Feel free to contact me at russell@w... if you need more
information. I look forward to hearing from you.

I have investigated the different GSM for the US & found one that I
liked & used. You may want to check this one out. It's about
$125usd. It's easy to interface to the bs2p. All you need is to
get a SIM card. The service providers : Multi-Tech has is AT&T and
TeamMobile.

Thanks for the tip. The price is definitely in the right range for
experimentation purposes.
Could you let me know if the socketmodem ships with a developer's
manual that explains how to interface w/ a PC or microcontroller
(like the BS2)?
The datasheet does not give a lot of details. I am not sure if I will
need to connect more than the TX, RX, Gnd, and Vdd pins for a basic
SMS test.
Thanks.
