ADC0831 analog digital converter

Hi, I am trying to hook up a adc0831 converter chip to the sharp
GP2D12 distance sensor. I got the clock, cs, and all the other pins
set up fine, but, since the senser only varies between 0 to 3V, the
reading is pretty much the same for distance 20cm+. I'm wondering
how the converter can be set up to sense the voltage change in that
region only -- so that it will be a lot more accurate.
Does anyone have any idea?
Thanks for reading and please reply soon.
