Hooking up a single pull double throw relay

Hi, I'm working on an art project and I'm having difficulty hooking
up my 6 volt coil relay to an output pin. The led will flash but the
relay won't switch or even be triggered. The regulated 5 volts seems
to be enough to trigger the switch, when I tested it with a manual
switch, as well as with a regulated 6 volts, so it's definately how
I'm hooking it up. Any and all suggestions would be greatly
appreciated.
thanks jeff

Are you attempting to turn on the relay directly from the Stamp? If so, the
relay probably requires more current to turn on than what the stamp can
provide.
You will likely need the stamp to trigger a transistor, and have the
transistor trigger the relay.
Real quick and dirty.....but effective......go to radio shaft and get a
2n2222 transistor.
Connect the base lead directly to the stamp output.
Connect the emitter to the relay positive
Connect the collector to the +5 volt power supply.
Ground the "negative"side of the relay coil
When the stamp pin goes high, the relay should turn on.
YOU WILL ALSO NEED A DIODE CONNECTED ACROSS THE RELAY COIL....IMPORTANT. The
cathode of the diode (side with a line) goes to the relay coil positive lead.
