servos and software control - a few newbie questions

hey there,

sooo i have a huge project im trying to finish by friday, and im just
starting with the basic stamp (wasted a bunch of time with an
oopic...). I'm really hoping to find someone who has done a similar
project and gain from their knowledge. The setup is - I have five
large-ish servos (4.8-6V) which i want to run off of a basic stamp-
laptop setup. i don't want to have a bunch of extra stuff in
between, just the servos, the stamp and the laptop if it's possible.
i tried out some basic programs tonight with limited success...so any
help is really really appreciated!! here are some specific questions:

-it seems like having more than one servo hooked up to the stamp
makes them all ineffective. I have them hooked up with power->Vss,
ground->Vdd, and control to the P0/P1/P2... ports. After that didn't
work, I tried bringing in an external power source for the different
servos (and connecting the external's and the basicstamp's
ground)...and uh that didn't work either. any ideas whats going on
here?

-i'm using modified servos to get more rotation...but im concerned
about getting the kind of control i want. *ideally* the final
program will be able to separately control each servo, and each servo
will have its own range of motion - ie it can go from, say, 0-450
degrees but no further, and i'd like to be able to have it spin both
clockwise and counterclockwise. these don't seem like unreasonable
things to ask ;)

Ok, i know that's a lot to read but please please please help out a
poor starving college student with zero hardware experience :)
sample code especially is useful. thanks so much!

check out this web site for schematics/boards/etc. to connect your servos to
a stamp and talk to the stamp via rs232 from your computer.
