Particular machine vision questions

Colleagues,

I need to add some sort of vision to my robotics project. The mission
of the vehicle is similar to the robotic football – find an object
and move it to the given coordinates. The environment is a dry flat
lakebed. Currently I'm considering two types of vision – optical and
ultrasonic (laser rangefinder is on my wish list too, but it's too
expensive). So here are my questions:

Some time ago I've seen an add in the Nuts & Volts about a CMOS image
sensor/camera, which transfers the data out serially (but not by
USB)? Does anyone know who makes such a thing?

Have anyone read the article on ultrasonic phased arrays in the Servo
Magazine? Does it give a good practical advice for building the
ultrasonic vision cell? Is the article worth tracking down?

Thanks you!

Sincerely,
Nick

The CMUCam, sold by Parallax and others, has a
CCD connected to an SX-48 processor. It provides
    on-module color-blob following.
