Simple question for anyone who may know the answer. In the section
where it discusses Interfacing to MIDI, can anyone tell me whther or
not the midi socket diagram illustrating which pins go where is a view
of the male or female side of a midi cable? Many thanks.

isn't fast enough to do MIDI which is something like 31k baud. You'll
need the sx one or a PIC, I believe . . .

that's a send, the receive are optically isolated. A typical stamp
isn't fast enough to do MIDI which is something like 31k baud. You'll
need the sx one or a PIC, I believe . . .

My midi project didn't work immediatly. I had to put a buffer (or 2
inverters) between the output pin and the resistor. Now it works fine.
Maybe the MIDI device I want to control needed more power than usual to get
it working...
I hope this helps

elsewhere...). If you have the jack, though, it will have the pins
numbered, and the document you reference was fairly explicit as to which
pin numbered was +5/gnd/data.

remember the baud rate limit on the BS2, but MIDI at 31.25 baud is quite
within its practical range. (I actually used 32768 baud which seems for
some reason to work better...)
BTW, optoisolation is in the MIDI spec because you don't want stray
voltage from speaker coils, etc. flowing through midi cables & blowing up
your processor, then continuing down the bus to the next device. In
practical means, you don't have to optoisolate it and it works fine. Just
be prepared to replace the BS2 if you have such a spike.
