windows 2000 won''t identify my Basic Stamp2 chip

I was wondering if anyone could help with a problem i have.
I am running windows 2000 and using a basic stamp2 chip to control
some stepper motors.
the problem i am having is that when i try and identify the chip
using the stamp editor software it does not detect/identify the chip.
i have made sure all of the comm port settings are correct does
anyone have any ideas on what i can try to solve the problem?
