making a calculator as a midi controller

I am attempting to make a calculator as
a midi controller and i want to be
able to add the different numbers on the number pad to
create various voltages to be released
through the out pin of the stamp into my softsynth.
would it be a good idea to have different resistors
from each button go to the input pins
and then make if/then loops to control the
numbers? or is there a better way to
control the flow of the numbers?
I am new to stamp programming and
making interfaces and would very
much like any feedback
sincerely,
