I have used Microchip's 24LC512 in my application. You can
address 2 Mbits (256 Kbytes) on a single I2C bus by using 4
512Kbit chips. However, I have had a problem accessing one half
of each chip. The chips are about $6 each from Digi-Key and come
in an 8-pin PDIP. Spec sheet says 1 million write/erase cycles.

Atmel also makes a 512 Kbit I2C serial EEPROM in an 8-pin PDIP
(AT24C512), but I have not found a vendor for these in small
quantities (though I would like to).
