Greetings!
Why not just make a boot diskette for the PC?
A 1.44MB holds a 'mini' install of DOS, the BS1 IDE and all your .BS
program files with lots of space to spare...
If worst comes to show, use a M$-DOS install diskette, press F5 while
booting, then insert a floppy with the IDE after the PC have finished
ignoring the setup scripts...

Well, the software is free -- and the BS1 itself isn't obsolete, just
not the latest model. You might have more fun playing around with the
BS2 because it has more features, but not necessarily. It's fun doing
the minimalist thing once in a while. Either way, I wouldn't return the
BS1 because of the software issue.
Like you, I run XP and I don't have the choice of dual-booting into DOS
because my hardware configuration is not DOS-compatible. (NTFS
completely, and a RAID drive configuration as well...)
On the other hand, I'm being patient. The new version of the
editor/compiler is a very nice product, even though it's still in beta
right now. I deleted the version in retail distribution because the beta
is trouble-free and much nicer. Currently that version supports only the
BS2 models, but Parallax have added support for the older BS1.
Unfortunately, that feature is only in alpha test right now and not
available to customers -- even in beta. I understand it will be
available in a few weeks.
Personally, I keep looking at the old machine in the corner and thinking
about loading the DOS mode BS1 software onto it. Then I remember what a
pain DOS is, and I only have "a few weeks" to wait. I can't imagine a
software schedule slipping, can you?<sigh>
Ah well, the BS2 is keeping me entertained meanwhile.

There's also the DR-DOS option...
http://stud3.tuwien.ac.at/~e0225895/drdos/drdos.htm
(The DR-DOS club where you can find links to download DR-DOS or
OPEN-DOS)
Works good.

One idea: create a Windows 98 (or earlier) boot floppy (assuming you
somewhere have a license for such) and copy the Parallax software to it.
Boot from the floppy. You won't be able to see your hard drives but you
will be able to write your code and compile/download it. Just think of
it as retro.
If you have a license and don't have a computer that can create the boot
floppy for you, you could probably find a copy on the Web -- search for
"boot disk" in google and you should find something.
