help with psx controller interface

Hey I need some help in the hardware side, I got the latest example code
from the n & b site (the one where that invers the shiftin manually so there
is no need fo rthat extra component (2n3904)) and I get it, but I am
confused on how to wire the controller I am assuming I need to cut the
plastic up til the point where all the connecting pins can be soldered to
cables and then just follow the image( taking the 2n3904 off and just
adding a resistance there straight into one of the stamp pins) looks like
pin 1 of the controller is connected to 5 volts and then to the stamp at the
same time to? no resistor before the input pin?

just want some pointers before I make a stupid mistake and brake my
controller, or even worst the stamp...

thanks
Carlos

What I did for a connector is hacked a cheap ($8) extension cable. I
glued it to an AppMod proto board and hand-wired the rest. The cable
colors are not always consistent, except that 5v is always red, and
ground is always black. You can use those to get your alignment
    correct.

I'll take a photo of my adapter and upload it to the files section (my
old digital cam had given up the ghost so I couldn't provide a photo for
    my N&V article).

    Thanks Jon.

that photo actually kind of confused me cause I am used to just
working on a regular breadboard with the stamp.

so basiclly all the extra stuff I need is the resistors:

    two 220
    two 4.7 k
    one 470
    and one 2n3904 transistor (any?)

    thanks
    Carlos

Sometimes we have to solder things.... You can probably use any
    general-purpose NPN for the invertor.
