I don't know that anyone has made the BS1 editor work in a DOS box under
XP (XP is very finicky about programs attempting direct port control as
the BS1 editor does). Don't fear ... we're adding BS1 support to our
Windows editor (I'll upload a screenshot to the file section to prove
it) and that makes life a breeze. I've even gone back and started
cleaning-up programs I wrote 10 years ago -- and having fun!

Jon,
What's the ETA on BS1 support under the Windows editor?

And just so I'm clear, until the Windows version 2.0 supports BS1,
our only option for programming BS1 stamps is the "BASIC Stamp 1 Editor for
DOS", right? There is no other software that programs BS1 right?

About a month ... but there are no guarantees. You know the saying,
"It's harder than it looks."

And yes, for the time being, the only editor/compiler we have for the
BS1 is the DOS version.

So what's a guy to do then?

When I first bought my BS1 Starter kit, I went to the store and the
salesman didn't tell me that you need to go back to software you
erased off your computer three years ago, he didn't tell me that the
development system is only DOS based. Frankly I doubt he had a
clue...

I'm using Windows XP, I have NTFS partitions, I am not going back to
archaic versions of MS software.

Should I just return the stuff (BS1 Starter kit) to the retailer?

Why would Parallax even allow obsolete stuff like this to stay on
retailers shelves?

Well, the software is free -- and the BS1 itself isn't obsolete, just not
the latest model. You might have more fun playing around with the BS2
because it has more features, but not necessarily. It's fun doing the
minimalist thing once in a while. Either way, I wouldn't return the BS1
because of the software issue.

Like you, I run XP and I don't have the choice of dual-booting into DOS
because my hardware configuration is not DOS-compatible. (NTFS completely,
and a RAID drive configuration as well...)

On the other hand, I'm being patient. The new version of the editor/compiler
is a very nice product, even though it's still in beta right now. I deleted
the version in retail distribution because the beta is trouble-free and much
nicer. Currently that version supports only the BS2 models, but Parallax
have added support for the older BS1. Unfortunately, that feature is only in
alpha test right now and not available to customers -- even in beta. I
understand it will be available in a few weeks.

Personally, I keep looking at the old machine in the corner and thinking
about loading the DOS mode BS1 software onto it. Then I remember what a pain
DOS is, and I only have "a few weeks" to wait. I can't imagine a software
schedule slipping, can you?<sigh>

Ah well, the BS2 is keeping me entertained meanwhile.

One idea: create a Windows 98 (or earlier) boot floppy (assuming you
somewhere have a license for such) and copy the Parallax software to it.
Boot from the floppy. You won't be able to see your hard drives but you will
be able to write your code and compile/download it. Just think of it as
retro.

If you have a license and don't have a computer that can create the boot
floppy for you, you could probably find a copy on the Web -- search for
"boot disk" in google and you should find something.

Of course you must to what you think is best for you. That said, the
hardware you purchased is not obsolte -- I've got a BS1 running a little
slave process for a BS2 on my desk this minute that I detail in my Nuts
& Volts article in December. I programmed the BS1 from a laptop running
XP Pro using an alpha version of our compiler that supports the BS1.
Our goal is to release a beta version of that software within a month,
so if you'll hold on just a bit you'll be able to program your BS1 with
your computer through a standard serial port (we've made a little
adapter for the serial line, and will provide the schematic if you want
to build your own [it's fairly simpl]).

Basically, once Parallax created the BS2, they
didn't see a lot of demand for the BS1. Out
of the goodness of their hearts, and because
the BS1 platform is cheaper, they continue
to make them, and 'support' (answer questions)
the BS1 for legacy applications.

They would like to port the DOS based
compiler to windows, but as I said, if there
is little demand for it, it doesn't make a
lot of sense to expend much effort on
this. So they havn't got the product out
yet.

The best solution for you is probably to
return the BS1 kit to your vendor, and
upgrade to a BS2 kit. It's a MUCH more
capable module, and you'll probably be
happier with it in the long run.

Note I am NOT an employee of Parallax,
I've just been on the Forum for a year,
and have seen this question a few times.

OK, having read through ALL the posts now, it
looks like they WILL be issuing a BS1 compiler
in the next month. You might as well hold on
to it and use it then.

It's not accurate to say that the demand for the BS1 diminished, sure a
bit, but the BS2 grew our customer base. Even with the BS2 family we
have steadily sold BS1 modules all this time. You may be wondering
about the "fire sale" on BS1 Rev D modules. The answer is simple: to
make room for the new version, the Rev Dx.

Yes, a lot of our efforts have been focused on the BS2 and until XP, we
could use the DOS compiler in the Windows environment. This has forced
our hand and we've solved the problem and are in final development and
testing now. You can take a look at a screenshot here:

http://f1.grp.yahoofs.com/v1/cPiTP1zvf_L3PMDpI5cq3GC9gclGyjOiAn-_Iw3oa41
rUgtQeuKF8XH2S2C3m2YJv2HzhcKnVZrgivG3_Jf8cQSszU0X3Q/BS1_In_Windows.jpg

I am an employee of Parallax and I can tell you that contrary to the
belief of some, the BS1 is not dead. Stay tuned, gang, new BS1 products
are just around the corner. The BS1 is a very capable little module and
I for one, am very excited that I can program it in the Windows
environment.

Sorry, the direct link to the photo didn't work out. Go here:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/basicstamps/

Then select Files from the menu an click on BS1_In_Windows.JPG -- that
is a screen shot from my computer showing the BS1 in the editor with
syntax highlighting and a memory map; something that doesn't exist in
the DOS BS1 editor (was introduced in the BS2).

Is it possible to have the real link suggested by Jon.

Good grief.

Yes, we have licenses and source around somewhere for everything since about
DOS 2.1 including some of the exotic offshoots. What I don't have apparently
is a memory worth a hoot. My own that is. It completely escaped me that it
once was possible to have a running operating system and your working files
on a single floppy.

And here I'm busy programming for a computer with a grand total of 32 bytes
of ram and 2k of non-volatile storage. Maybe it's my mind that's going<g>.

That's pretty retro alright. Only one thing worries me... how much will the
remnants of my brain suffer from the radiation effects of the DOS command
interface on a 21" monitor?

Thank you both for pointing out what should have been obvious.

Beautiful. Just what I was hoping for, Jon.

Well, almost. It says PBasic 1.0 in that directive and I was so hoping to
use select-case statements to program my BS-1's. Doggone it.

That will take additional time, and SELECT-CASE is such a memory hog
that it probably won't make it anyway -- remember, we only have 256
bytes for tokens in the BS1.

And it worked like a dream. Here's the procedure for anyone else whose daily
driver is picky about sharing ports, like XP:

1. Put a 1.44MB floppy in the drive.

2. Open My-Computer.

3. Right-click on the drive title, which will be something like "1.44MB
Floppy" unless you accidentally grabbed a floppy with a name.

4. Select "format"; click "Make a bootable disk"; and click "Start".

5. Turn off system and immediately turn it back on.

6. At the boot, catch the BIOS set-up entry. For my system, I hold down the
delete key. From here, you're on your own in setting the boot sequence to
include the floppy drive BEFORE the hard drive, but it should be fairly
obvious from the menus. If you're new to the BIOS I don't suggest you
randomly change anything else. I strongly recommend you do NOT. My charge
for house calls is terrifying -- and you may not have a bootable computer to
look for help on the internet if you mess with random entries here.

7. Save the new BIOS setting, and let it continue the re-boot. If you made
the right change, it will now go to the floppy drive for boot.

8. Curse. In as many languages as you have handy. Restart XP and repeat from
Step 1. This time make three floppy disks that are hypothetically bootable,
because your blank floppies have been sitting there gathering dust for three
years, and half of them will cause a "DISK I/O ERROR" when the BIOS attempts
to read the boot program. Turn off system again and reboot with one of these
new floppies in the drive.

9. When the classic a:> prompt appears, give a cheer. Now you know the drive
works and the floppy is bootable, so restart XP to do what a less skeptical
person might have done after step 4: put the Parallax CD in its drive and
copy "stamp.exe" from the software folder over to the floppy. I created a
directory called "stamp" (aka a "folder") for this purpose. Just for fun
copy "debug.bas" as well so you have something to load and execute. Now
restart the system again, letting it boot from that floppy.

10. Connect the cable and press a 9V battery into the BS1's connector.

11. Start the editor, press alt-L and select "debug.bas". Press alt-R to run
the program. Now a couple more times just in case. Curse. Invent some
languages to curse more extensively. Rummage in wife's miscellaneous drawer
for a 9V battery that actually has some electrons.

12. Install the battery manufactured in this century and run "debug.bas".
Applaud quietly and run yourself. Apologize to wife for delay while dealing
with life-critical problem when you promised to leave for shopping ten
minutes ago.

Elapsed time: twenty minutes. And worth every second. Boy, those DOS fonts
look big on a 21" monitor, but I had grabbed one of my BS1's at random and
it cheerfully counted to ten for me when I ran "debug.bas". Lovely. I'm in
business.

Actually, I didn't check the memory available on the BS1, Jon, so I did not
know -- but I was joking in any case.<g> I think it's amazing we can program

Well, all kidding aside, our compiler engineer and I had a chat the
other day about an update to PBASIC 1.0 (which will also allow modules
for the Mac and Linux crowd). We feel quite certain that we can't make
the kinds of updates we did when moving from PBASIC 2.0 to 2.5, but we
can make a couple simple changes that will make programming just a bit
easier for those less used to embedded BASIC.
