Encoder wheel? — Parallax Forums

Encoder wheel?

I'm not sure this is the correct name but I'd like to find one of
the wheels with hundreds of tiny holes around the edge and an
optical sensor that counts the holes go by.

I have seen these in inkjet printers.

What are they called and where can I get one with the sensor?

Thanks

Got any junked mice laying around?

There are lots of variations of the wheel.

one is a clear plastic sheet with laser printing black areas. you
may get more holes per revolution that way.

another method is to use 2 wheels, or one wheel with 2 prints so that
you can tell which way you are moving.

And there even multiple printings for higher resoluiton.

And expired mouse is the easiest place to start.

If you use a powerful optical coupler, those inkjet print may look
like a clear plastic to it. It puszzled me when I started designing
encoders. The real effective one use solid material with holes. A real
good method is using a fiber glass PCB and etch your encoder on it.
The process is the same as making a photo etch PCB. The etched portion
would look transparent to the opto coupler.

    Cheers,

You can get Encoders from <A
    HREF="www.automationdirect.com">www.automationdirect.com</A>

They have glass wheels with from 100 to 2500 lines of resolution.

    Hope this helps.

If you are looking for some metal encoder wheels and matching quadrature
sensors and can make your own mounts, I have a cheaper source for you.

On that note, I'm curious if there's any gray code to binary conversion
functions built into stamp reading protocols. Or is this something you have
to write into the BS app itself?

Need multiple sensors and a wheel with multiple levels. the grey
code is not that hard, but it does take some programming, We
discussed it on the list about a year or so ago. IIRC, Check for a
post from Tracy Allen (surprise, surprise).
