helped me drive from my home in Dallas to my brother's house in
Columbus, Ohio without ever missing a turn. It also uses a feature
found in Garmin GPS units that provides the data at 9600 baud (twice the
speed on NMEA 0183) and fixed-format data that is easier to parse.
Look for it in the November issue of Nuts & Volts.

950 miles after having slept only three hours the night before. After
nearly nodding off in the middle of Arkansas I put in a Kidd Rock CD and
turned it up LOUD.... Had no problems staying alert after that.
The project is, essentially, a non-contact speedo and secondary (trip)
odometer. The challenge was taking the NS and EW data spit out at
meters per second and converting it to an mph vector to get actual speed
and direction of travel. The project is a good demo of the newly
documented HYP and ATN functions in the Stamp.

was a race car (Formula Ford) on a race track. I did, however drive 950
miles on the first day of my vacation; average speed about 70 mph.
I have wide tastes in music. While a big fan of classic rock (Stones,
Zeppelin, Aerosmith), I do like a few new things, in particular, No
Doubt and Counting Crows. But ... during that sleepy stage of my drive
I needed something that the Starbucks just wasn't doing for me, hence
the Kidd Rock.
The best part about enjoying Kidd Rock is that it breaks my acting
stereo type (nice guy, daddy-next-door -- see for yourself at
http://members.aol.com/jonmcp). Keep your fingers crossed, gang,
because if things go my way you will see me in a major role in a feature
movie as I guy who sells educational electronics kits -- and Parallax is
his biggest line!
Okay, back to the office. For those of you that are fans of the NX-1000
board ... we have another version coming. This one has a 40-pin socket
and a small selection of I2C parts on the board. It won't displace our
current NX-1000, it will be an addition to the line.

PS: I wouldn't be caught dead in a Speedo! I don't mind a bit of
head-banging though.

song as how bad I sing that does the trick.
I would say if you *averaged* 70, you true speed was more? Did you make
the heads-up display we talked about before, and if so, was it 2 1/2 or
3 digits?
Rick got a cool 1x16 VFD display with power supply and serial interface
from BG Micro that would work well for automotive applications.

I just wonder what calculations you are planning on the November
column using GPS.
Do you calculate bearing/direction (0-365) as well as range to next
point of turn.
Will you use a PAK II for Tan calculation, or some other way to find
the direction/range?
And will this "point of turn" then have an area (20-100m) pre-
massage/status or something, to prevent bypass.
Idea:
What about implementing warning about automatic traffic control
points as well? Some countries have a photo box that takes a picture
of cars driving to fast. Could be interesting to get a warning from
the Basic stamp about that, assume the position is on RAM.
