How to choose a motor?

Colleagues,

Please help me to choose the motor for the vehicle, which:

1. Uses two motos, so it can steer like a tank.
2. Can travel 5 miles in 1 hour (velocity 2.2m/s) on level asphalt.
3. Has a weight of 20lbs (10kg).
4. Has 8" (200mm) diameter wheels.

How big sould the torque be? Is there a formula?
Which places would you you suggest to look for a motor?
Any kind of motor will do.

Thanks!

Sincerely,
Nick

    Big time.

Although I still do not know what I really need...

Don't forget that once you pick a motor you think will work, calculate the
power consumption over the time to run required and select the power source
(battery) and then determine the weight of the power source, then try again
to pick a motor until everything is considered. Remember that the battery
will not put out the same voltage throughout it's discharge cycle unless it
is very overcapacity and in that case you are carrying excess weight. On
another thought, you don't need two motors. Drive both with a differential
arrangement and apply a brake to one or the other to turn. This may save
considerable weight and energy as the break just must be applied
intermittantly but the motor would need to be powered at all times.

    Hi Nick,

look for a e-mail from me.

the calc's I have are rough and not in simple to use form, but should
give you a couple places to get your calcs started.

if you are using a bogus e-mail (like many people on these lists) let
me know where to send them.

I'd post here, but they are really rough and a couple of pages.

    Dave
