There was another of these several years ago, except that it dove
periodically as it crossed the ocean to take measurements at depth. It used
a small bladder for changing bouancy. It was solar powered. Last I read it
was supposed to replace sending ships to make the same measurements, which
were necessary weather, etc. It had little wings.

Good Day:
I am building a series of drifting bouys placed in the Gulf Stream and
tracked via satellite. The first just provides position information. However
the future units should provide voltage, water temp and salinity info.

If interested, I could use a hand on a stamp based data acquisition unit for
the bouy.....

First one I heard of was back in the 80's. It used a Micro with Forth
built in, called ratfor or something similar. It used a large pyrex

Umm, RatFor stands for Rational Fortran --
it was a pre-compiler invented by Kernighan
    and Plauger.

There was Forth Interest Group Forth (Fig-Forth).

Here is one and there is a link to it. Pretty cool, the wings enable it to
provide forward motion as it dives. One I read about years ago sent gps
location and temp/salinity/depth data to satellites. They are starting to
use swarms of them now and giving them a lot more smarts.

Other AUVs, known as gliders, travel forward using lift generated as they
rise and fall through the water column. Internal computers change a glider’s
buoyancy by pumping mineral oil into or out of an external bladder. When the
bladder is full, the glider displaces a greater volume than when the bladder
is empty. When oil is pumped out of the bladder, the glider’s effective
volume decreases while its mass stays the same, until it becomes dense
enough to sink. When the glider reaches a predetermined depth, the oil is
pumped into the bladder and the glider rises toward the surface again. Short
wings allow a glider to travel horizontally as it rises and falls. Since
they have no motors, gliders use very little power, and can stay at sea for
weeks or even months at a time. However, they travel relatively slowly (less
then 1 knot) and can only carry one or two instruments at a time. During the
AOSN 2003 field experiment, up to 15 different gliders may be criss-crossing
Monterey Bay at any one time.

Give me a break, it was long ago. It's actually Rafos, you can see

'RAFOS', 'RATFOR', they're very close, whatever.
Thanks for the link, it is fascinating. BTW,
from one of the web pages it looks like that
glass tube is around 6 feet long.

It's not clear what parts are written in C++,
while other parts are written in Forth. Still,
    fascinating project.
