OT: Getting images from PDFs

Hi All,

This is a little OT, but it is for a Stamp based project. I am in the
process of making documentation for students to use a device I have made. I
want to insert various images from component spec. sheets. What is the
legality of this, and how (if legal) can I get the images out of the PDFs? I
can do a screen capture, but it never looks as good as the original.

I would like, for example, to take the image from Parallax's documentation
of the 2p40 layout, and add information like what pins go to what devices.

Thanks,

Jonathan

Check thier copyright notices first - some will put in a clause saying that
copies can be made for teaching purposes and under what conditions this is
allowed. Other than that, you'd have to contact the publisher of the PDF and
ask.

I think by default, if it says copyright anywhere, you aren't allowed to
copy without permission.

To get an image 'out' of a pdf, such as a component
pin out, you can use the graphic select tool, to
select the diagram or picture, and print it or put it in
the clip board, etc...

This graphic select tool is available in the full version
of adobe acrobat, it may not ne available in the reader version.

I am as much of a copyright expert as everyone else in the
basicstamps discussion group ;). There is a concept in copyright law
called "fair use," which explicitly allows the use of copyrighted
material for educational use, criticism, and so forth. It's a
question of balance; you can't go cheating the copyright holder out
of legitimate income, you can't prevent the expression of ideas for
criticism, education, and related areas. Thus, fair use would not
allow one to photocopy 100 copies of a reading workbook to use in
your third-grade reading classes, but it would allow one to reproduce
excerpts, for example, photographs or schematics, in the instructions
that you create for your electronics classes. This is especially true
if you are assigning a project, to use your example, that uses the
BS2p40; your assigning that chip would benefit Parallax in two ways.
First, your students using the 2p40s should result in at least some
sales; secondly, if students learn how to use the 2p40, some are
quite likely to specify that device for industrial or research use
after they graduate.
On a more practical note, why not just ASK Parallax for permission
to use the diagram in your class notes?

Don't know about the legalities. But would imagine you'll need
permission.

>> how (if legal) can I get the images out of the PDFs?

Open PDF with Acrobat 6.

File, Save As

Select HTML from drop down list.

Let it do its thing (can take awhile depending upon how large PDF
is). When finished, check the images directory that it created.

I have had a lot of problems with 6. First, uninstall 5 first, or else
you will have trouble. Second, many of our PDFs started showing bounding
boxes around the letters. In fact, one of the things I am doing today is
redoing all our significant PDF files to correct this and spruce them up
(most of the PAK manuals are updated as of yesterday; more to come). So
if you are using 5 and happy with it, I'd say stick with it until 6.1 or
whatever. Just my opinion.

I second that I installed 6 and had nothing but trouble, removed it
reinstalled 5. I thought it was just my machine guess not, but it does have
some nice features.

The graphic tool is available in the reader versions. Selections may be
outline, copied, then pasted to a non.pdf document.

Adobe Acrobat, except for the fact that it can be read by users of
Macs (about 5% of all users), is inefficient :
- bloated code
- bad picture at low resolution
- slow
I never understood why it was so promoted by editors.

Most Parallax documentation explicitly states that it may be reproduced
for educational purposes so long as the duplicate documentation is used
exclusively with genuine Parallax products [not work-alikes] and there
is NO CHARGE to students/participants behond the cost of duplication.
We do, of course, exclude competitors who duplicate the PBASIC language
(extended or otherwise) for use in their non-Parallax products.

Hi All,

Thanks for all of the input. I'll have to get a newer version of Acrobat,
but I need to anyway. I ended up just re-drawing everything so far, which
considering my options, was just as fast as anything else.

You could have displayed the image in Acrobat Reader and used a screen
capture to import it into a graphics program. To get a screen capture, just
press the "Print Screen" key on your keyboard. Start up your graphic program
and paste the screen capture into it. Then just trim as needed to get the
graphic you want.

ECO,
The "bloated code" in a PDF file can include whatever original fonts are
needed to make the formatting appear universally accurate and is non-platform
specific, certainly not just for Macintoshes. I'm not aware of any readily
available alternative document type that will do this (most definitely NOT
Microsoft
Word!).

The pictures only look 'bad' if they are originally such, or if you set
Acrobat to save JPEGs or bitmaps to a decidedly lower resolution than original.
Vector art scales *very* nicely, which is particularly useful for schematics.
Many print ads and articles are sent to newspaper and magazine publishers in PDF

format, with very good resolution and relatively small file size (not much
larger than the JPEGs that it may include). I know this to be true because I use

Acrobat regularly both for print ads and for in-house schematics.

I've found its speed is reasonably fast on a reasonably fast computer :-)

The PDF format is promoted by people who want the end user to be able to see
exactly what the originator intended. And that's exactly the reason I use it.
While nothing is perfect, and Adobe Acrobat is not glitch-free, I feel that
both conceptually and in reality Acrobat is a very useful tool. I applaud its
widespread adoption, especially for technical publishing. I'm glad Parallax
makes use of it for their documentation.

Hank,

That is what I have been trying. However, the results haven't been so good.

I just got a free PDF maker, I'll let you know if it is any good.

Hello Jonathan.

You can ask for the images you need in the ParallaxEducators forum
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ParallaxEducators/
(you're already member of that forum) and I can upload the original ones
in the Files area. That way you can graduate the image quality/download
time settings for your PDF file.

We support all the Educators using the BASIC Stamp or any other Parallax
product in their classrooms, so just ask on that forum and we'll help
you building the documentation of your Stamp based curriculum.

Subject: [basicstamps] OT: Getting images from PDFs

Hi All,

This is a little OT, but it is for a Stamp based project. I am in the
process of making documentation for students to use a device I have
made. I
want to insert various images from component spec. sheets. What is the
legality of this, and how (if legal) can I get the images out of the
PDFs? I
can do a screen capture, but it never looks as good as the original.

I would like, for example, to take the image from Parallax's
documentation
of the 2p40 layout, and add information like what pins go to what
devices.

Thanks,

Jonathan

If you use the old adage, that copying a copyrighted work is called
plagiarism, but copying lots and lots is called research...

if you use something you are unsure of the actual source, show the
link/reference to where you found it.

contact every source for permission.

For lifting graphics from existing pdf files, set your monitor for as
high a dot pitch as you can, open the pdf file, zoom to get the
graphic as large as possible and <alt> <prnt scn>, then paste it into
Irfranview, then crop it.
