Jonathan,
Do you have one device that is consuming more power than one LM2940, or the
sum of many devices consumes the exceeds the current output of one LM2940?
Assuming the latter, and the total current consumption from all your devices
is say 1.5 amps, the easiest and most foolproof method would be the following:
Power some of the devices from one LM2940, and power the rest from the other
LM2940 and make sure all components share the same ground (big fat wide
trace).
So one LM2940 will supply about .75 amps, and the other will supply about .75
amps.
