"No Basic Stamp Found" error

edited 2003-08-15 17:29 in General Discussion
Received my BS2 starter kit. Want to use my Toshiba Tecra notebook
with the editor. Loaded Windows software and Got the error "No Basic
Stamp Found." Not getting an "Echo" on COM 1. Then tried it on my
desktop...works great.
Any ideas what may be wrong? Both computers running Win. 98. I tried
both the v.1.3 and the Beta versions of the Editor. Yes, this is my
first time working with micro-controllers.

    Jake.
I don't think its you. It might be your notbook's setings. In the device manager
check to see if your ir port is inabled. If it is disable your irport and
reinable your serial port. But if this dosn't work for you, you may need a usb
to serial adaptor from parallex. I hope this works for you ( at least it did
    for me).

    Hi,

With Toshiba notebooks, it is usually the FIFO buffers. Turn them off, and
    it will (hopefully) work.

You are having the same problem that I did. Test your serial port with
another device to make sure that it is working. Once you get it working
with say, an external modem, then "do" Start Menu, Control Panel,
System, Device Manager, expand "Ports", select "Com1", click
"Properties", then "Port Settings" then click Advanced. After
navigating this rabbit warren, you should now have a window open with
"Advanced Port Settings" with two sliders for "receive buffer" and
"Transmit buffer". Slide them all the way to the left (Low(1)) setting.
Click "OK". and back out of the Microsoft maze by clicking "OK" each
window that has that option. You should now be able to successfully
identify and communicate with the stamp.

    Jake:

I also had the same problem with my Toshiba Tecra 8100 running windows 2000
Pro. The solution is very easy. Go to your device manager in windows,
select ports then click on com ports, click on your com port (com-1, com-2
etc) click the "port" settings tab, then the "advanced" button and disable
    FIFO.

That cured my problem and I am pretty sure it will take care of yours as
    well.

FWIW, I ran into a problem one person was having in programming a
Stache using a home-built PC. For some reason, the tx line from the
PC was resting at a high +12 volt level, instead of the usual -12
volts, due to some unusual BIOS or hardware thing. This would cause
programming to fail. The resolution was to open a debug window on
that programming port, and then the port would go properly to -12
volts and the RUN command (F9) would work. I later found out from
Parallax tech support that they had seen a similar issue in
programming Stamps on a very few laptop computers, resolved with the
    same workaround.

I've had this trouble as well. Although in my case I had
the application Hotsync running. Hotsync is a program
that will download information into my palm pilot through
a serial port. Although, I had the palm cradle detached
from the pc, the software still held that serial port.
You might check that you don't have any of these types of
    applications running.

Sounds like Parallax could do a FAQ or 'set-up bulletin' on this with
    nots from readers.

stick it in the files section.
