Sumo Bot

Hi guys, has any of you come across this "Sumo Bot"
(www.tabrobotkit.com)?.Im wondering if its really run by a bs2
microcontroller inside?
Will it be programmable to my will, using the bs2 dev kit? or do i
need to buy the bs2 chip separately?

Its only selling for usd 99, as opposed to a bs2 kit which is higher
in price..are there any downsides on getting this sumo bot?

Anyway, ill be using it primarily for motor & light control and i
would really appreciate a reply since i need to purchase one
urgently.

ps: the $ difference between the 2 kits might be minute, however im
not a resident of the US of A so i'd like to spend as little as
possible, due to the high conversion rate :)

Thanks in advance!

Its rather confusing as there appears to be no Stamp socket on the
board, but the documentation mentions a BS2 socket. Since their original
robot did not come with a BS2, I would definitely check with them before
assuming the sumo robot did.

I believe that product uses a surface-mount BS2.

Jon is correct. The TAB "Sumo Bot" includes a surface-mount BS2, so
there isn't a socket.

I think they need to do a better job on their documentation. The SumoBot
"Mobile Robot Anatomy" link takes you to a PDF file that talks about the
SumoBot, then gives you the specs for their first robot. Several
paragraphs down they eventually mention the fact the SumoBot has a
built-in BS2.

Is there a DB9 connector to program it? What about the caps in the ATN line
- do they have to be added?

I have a sumobot from parallax and it seems to have a surface-mount BS2.
It definitely doesn't seem to have a socket.

Why does it matter if there is a socket? Is there any difference in
functionality? The TAB seems to be about half the price.

For clarification, the Parallax SumoBot is mini-sumo competition legal;
the TAB robot is not. While it could run in standar events, I don't
think it would fare well. I believe the TAB robot is really intended
more for education than for competition.

Different beast. We were talking about the TAB brand Sumo robot -- not
the Parallax.

It doesn't make any diffence which version of the BS2 you have, but the
original question dealt with whether or not the TAB brand (not Parallax)
sumo robot came with a BS2. This was asked because the price appeared
too good to be true, and TAB had sold another robot without a BS2 --
including a limited-life discount coupon for purchasing a BS2 from
Parallax.

Actually, it was the Tab Robots SumoBot that
got me into the Basic Stamp, back in December.

First of all, there are two Tab Robot kits.
First came the 'Build Your Own Robot Kit' (BYORK),
and then the SumoBot -- which is badly named, as has
been pointed out, it does not meet sumo bot
rules -- but it is a very nice platform for a
very nice price.

Make sure you order the one you want. The
BYORK is socketed for a 24-pin BS2 module, to be
ordered separately from Parallax. The
SumoBot has an OEM surface-mount BS2 soldered on.

Both 'bots' use a 'slave' PIC processor to do the
low-level control of the motors, and reading
signals from an IR-LED driven remote (supplied
with the 'Bot'). The BS2 adds program control,
allowing you to tell the 'slave' PIC to go
forward, reverse, check some IR-LED 'whiskers'
for object avoidance, check for IR-Remote
button pushes, and has a CDS light-cell to
check light levels. You use the light-cell
for light-seeking or light-avoiding
behaviours.

Both bots use 2 DC motors, driven by an on-bot
battery, controlled by the 'slave' PIC for movement.

The way the IR-remote is configured, it is not
possible to control two Tab Sumobots at the same
time (two remotes 'jam' each other), so be aware
you can't race them against each other -- unless
you use program control most of the time.

The SumoBot DOES have the Parallax type
breadboard breakout for its BS2 signals, so you
could use it for light control. The motor control
circuitry has been 'tweaked' for the particular
motors they are using -- you may still need to
add circuitry to control other motors.

And there is a DB-9 on-bot for a programming and
debug port, properly wired for the Parallax
software.

It turns out there are several 24-pin socket
modules compatible with a BS2 -- BS2sx,
the Java-based 'Javelin' -- and with a socket,
you could easily 'upgrade' your 'bot'. Without a
socket, you can't.
