Yes, my initial training in this beast came
from the 'Analog and Digital Interfacing' course
from Parallax. The 'What's a Microprocessor' class
also is very useful.

A and D class teaches use of SPI bus, 0831 AtoD chip,
DtoA techniques, Sound, etc. The 'What's an M' class
includes controlling a Servo.

Parallax has excellent classes. You can download
the 'paper' course materials from their site for
free, and can purchase the course and parts
from their site if you're impatient. Also see
the 'Nuts and Volts' area of their site for more
techniques and code.

The courses assume you've purchased the Board Of
Education (BOE) (Kit $120 with Stamp).
If you wish, you can roll-your-own BOE by
buying one of those white breadboards from
Radio Shack, adding a serial cable, a DB9, a
7805 regulator circuit, and a 7.5 to 12 volt
'wall-wart' AC to DC power supply
(with 2.1/5.5 mm power connector).
Purchase a BS2 to use with it, and you're
all set. You'll save a little money this
way (approx $40.00) and learn a lot.

Alternatively, you could take advantage of
Parallax Homework Board offer for $79.00.
Add a 9-volt wall-wart battery replacement,
and you get the parts for 'What's an M'
with it.
