Soldering help!

Hey guys,
I have a soldering question. Here is a picture of a connector I have
http://www.chadphillips.org/imgs/zaurusport.jpg
Can anyone give me some ideas on how to connect a cable to this. So
far what I have done is pull out the pins and solder some really thin
wire to the pins, then put it back together. I don't have the best
soldering skills, so am having some trouble making good connections.
Is there an easier way to connect to this thing? Or do I just need to
practice some more?
thanks
chad

1) Use a vise to hold the connector such as a Panavise sold at electrical
stores.
2) Use a hot enough solder iron that will melt the solder quickly. 30 watt
is plenty
3) poke the wire thru the hole in each connector pin, and wrap it into a U
shape until the wire holds itself on the pin easily.
4) heat the pin, than apply solder to the pin, allowing it to flow into the
wire and the hole.
5) Get yourself some cheap magnifying glasses. Even if you do not need
glasses you will be amazed how much they help for small detail work. Sold at
most pharmacys for about $8
6) Start with the inner wires first, and work outwards. Or start at one end
and work across to the other side.
7) Dont forget to put small heat shrink onto the wire first and then poke
the wire thru the hole (on the pin) to be solderd. Heat shrink will help in
case you have any stray wires, it will surrond the wire at each pin.
It also helps as a support as well.
8) stranded wire is sometimes easier to work with then solid core wire.
9) You could try tinning the wire itself first, but you want to ensure the
solder/tinning is just a thin paint over the wire, big globs of solder on
the wire will not allow you to poke the wire through the pins hole.
parallax sells tinned wires in their hobby kits, I am sure you have seen
them before as an example.
GOOD LUCK. I think the 2x-3x glasses will help you more then anything. I
have 20-20 vision, but still use them for very small detail work such as this.
