A/D result calculation

OK, I've managed to get a result from the I2C ADS7823 A/D converter.
Now I am spinning my wheels trying to deal with the 12 digit
result. Is there a simple, relatively simple way to do the math
required to do the overflow math required?
I've found the referals to some of the web pages on the integer math
work arounds, but alas I grow weary and ask for a semi-standard
solution.
Thanks.
And you do divide by 4096, NOT 4095, correct?
Can you just shift this number left or right, 12 times, whichever is
correct, to get the result. Or would this be too easy.
Thanks twice.
