Sorry for posting off-topic. I've sent a message to Atmel about a problems
I'm having, and was hoping that someone here with AVR experience might be
able to help.

Please respond off-list to zman97211@y..., so as not to clog the list.

Thanks! Message follows:

I'm just starting to work with the AVR microprocessors. I ordered the STK500
and a couple ATMEGA162 chips from Digikey. The pre-programmed chip that came
with the kit ran its program without problems.

I then hooked it up to my system, and started AVR studio. When I clicked on
the AVR button on the toolbar, it told me that the kit needed a firmware
upgrade. This procedure went without a hitch.

I then plugged an ATMEGA162 into the SCKT3000D3 (is this correct? I followed
the same procedures for an ATMEGA161), connected the 6 pin header cable from
ISP6PIN to SPROG3, applied power, and went to the AVR dialog box, selected
ATMEGA162, and read the device signature, which matched what I selected.

Now, here's the problem - When I read the lock bits, I get different results
each time. All I need to do is hit "Read", and sometimes I get 0xFF,
sometimes 0xFE, and sometimes 0x08. Also, on the Fuses tab I occasionally
get different results as well.

This is a factory new ATMEGA162. I have two, and both produce the same
results.

System configuration:

Windows XP
P3 900 MHz Dell Inspiron 8000 w/ 128 MB RAM
AVR Studio 4.07 (About box gives me AVR: 4,7,0,240 and for XP: 5.1.2 build
2600)
Device: ATmega162 (other markings: "16PI" and "0320", Digikey P/N
ATMEGA162-16PI-ND)
Programming voltage - Unknown? Not programming yet? :)
Jumper settings: Factory default

Please let me know if you need more information.

Thank you for your time.
