Ok, where do I take a course on ASCII schematic generation? Do you guys
do this all by hand or do you have a sneaky program that helps you make
these keen diagrams? If you're all doing these by hand, you rock! :D

You want to draw schematics? Download ExpressPCB (free) and use their
program.

Sid:

Thanx for the info. Though actually, I was being a bit silly whilst
trying to deliver a compliment. I know what a pain it is to describe a
solution w/o benefit of illustration and subsequently how difficult it is
to create an illustration using just plain ASCII text!

I have been quite surprised and impressed at the quality and the apparent
ease with which various contributors to the list have been able to create
highly useful ASCII schematics and how *good* they are at it! :)

PS: Though I have seen some of the layout-software offers from various
companies, I still use graph paper mostly.... ;)

The FIRST step in ASCII art is choosing the font to use. You need a
'mono' spaced font that has the same width for each letter.
i.e.|||||MMMM are all equal in width. Courier and other typewriter
looking fonts work well.

Second step: just start drawing something simple.
Don't use tabs - just spaces.

oh, yeh - the MOST important step is to 'borrow' as many neat ideas
as you can from others .

Whoops. I fixed that page to have a link at the top (it used to be in
the now-defunct Wiki so the link was implicit). You can go straight
there with http://www.al-williams.com/free/asciicad.exe

Speaking of which, all the help links point to the old server, so I
guess I should fix it.

At the top of the page, right-click on that link and use "save target as",
presuming you're using Internet Explorer.

Using that method it worked for me.

As a little aside, there used to be a DOS program called TheDraw which I
used to use to do ASCII/ANSI animations for my old BBS. Cool little
program...

Now, back to our regularly scheduled messages!

http://www.jave.de/ -- this is the biggest and most complex ASCII text
program I've ever seen. Like photoshop for text.

Also, while I was trying to remember this link I ran into:
http://directory.google.com/Top/Arts/Visual_Arts/ASCII_Art/Software/?tc=
1 -- so this is hardly an original idea.

I just uploaded V1.8a which fixes the links on the help and homepage
items. If your help and homepage links don't work you should download
this version:

http://www.al-williams.com/free/asciicad.htm will get you there.

I learned a lot about the art of ascii schematics on this list from
master Beau Schwabe.

There are tricks to doing it by hand, and once you've done a few, it
gets a lot easier to repeat the same kind of circuit you've already
done. But getting the spacing right is a pain any time you go to
change anything or to make it pretty the first time.

One nice thing about ascii schematics is that they can follow a
document without any special graphics capability. For some documents
that is a real help, as for example, the circuit that goes with an
ascii program listing. Once I have drawn one of those, if someone
asks a question and I know I already have it on my web site, I just
have to copy and paste into an email.

I use a Mac, and have a hypercard stack with hundreds of schematics
in gif and ascii formats.
