DTMF

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone know of a way to decode DTMF Tones with
the basic stamp. The CM8880 Tone decoder is no longer available. I
was hoping this could be done without any external IC's but if anyone
knows of any way, it would be most helpful.

Thank you very much,
Travis

    Hi Travis -

Zarlink (formerly Mitel Semiconductor) may have a unit which is compatible
with the obsolete California Micro CM8880. Take a look here:
    http://products.zarlink.com/product_profiles/MT8880C.htm

I've not used it, so I can't vouch for its compatibility. They offer a number
of DTMF receivers, other than the one shown above. Go here and use the Product
Search facility with "DTMF" as the search term:

www.bgmicro.com shows that they still have some ICS8870 dtmf tone
decoder chips. You might give them a try if that one is suitable for you
    purposes.
The ICS8870 is equivalent to the MT8870 decoder chips.

HAVE YOU CHECKED WITH PARALLAX PARTS.

    I GOT MINE FROM THEM.

IF THEY DON'T HAVE THEM NOW. THERE ARE OTHERS SUPPLIERS THAT WILL.

IT IS A VERY COMMON PART.

I know the BS2 can send DTMF (DTMFOUT) signals but can it read or
    listen to them?

    Thanks,

    Chris

    Chris

You'll need a separate DTMF decoder chip which actually
interfaces quite easily with the stamp.

If you're interested, contact me by e-mail off list and I'll dig it
    out of the archives.

In the robot-builders bonanza book it says the Basic Stamp can be
used to decode DTMF tones instead of a decoder circuit. Is this
    true? If so how?

    Thanks,

No, it's not. The BASIC Stamp 2 family can generate DTMF tones, but
    decoding requires external hardware.
