sht-11/71 source?

I'm trying to find a one-off source for these humidity sensors - preferrably
in Canada though I don't have my hopes up :D

I tried the parallax site. $29US each I can handle, but the $50US shipping
to Canada is out of the question.

PM,

Sensiron will send you a free sample, if you can mount it yourself. I made a
little board, really easy and works fine.

Hello,

Try: http://www.phanderson.com/ordering_1.html , Mr. Anderson is
really nice and he only charges what is necessary. It only cost me
$1.50 to get a few chips sent. But thats because I live in the US.
I dont think it would cost to much more for him to ship to Canada.
The cost for the SHT71 is: $25US.

Hope this helps,
Harrison

I use a Humirel HS1101 (Digikey Part# HS1101-ND [$18.32 CDN]) with good success.

This isn't a smart device, it's just a variable capacitor. Not nearly as
elegant as the sht-11/71

I use the 555 based circuit that's in the datasheet to get at the RH.

http://rocky.digikey.com/WebLib/Humirel/HS1101.pdf

If you order it, be sure to order the anciliary resistors for the type of 555 to
be used at the same time!

Don't forget that orders under $32.50 from Digikey have a $6.50 handling charge.

Cheers,
Dave

If you made a board to mount the Sensirion sensor, do you have any info
on that available?

It was easy as can be. I just took a small chunk of PCB, used resist tape to
make traces, and etched it. Then I tinned it well, set my solder pencil
really low, and then heated the taces. I used a right angle SIP header to
connect it to the rest of the circuit. Read the app. notes for important
soldering information.

Thanks. What I was really thinking about was air circulation around the

Dang, didn't even notice he had those on the site. The '71 is actually the
one I preferred too! Once I find out how much he wants for shipping, I'll
give Mr. Peter an order. His just reward for being such a helpfull person :D

Hello,

He says that it costs $3.00 shipping for a few ounces to Canada.
That is pretty cheap.

I made mine to look like the mounted version sold by sensiron. I mounted it
in a waterproof flashlight. The SHT went where the lightbulb usually does,
with a runnber boot to seal it off from the body of the flashlight. The lens
was replaced with a fine plastic mesh to keep contamination out.

Hope this is what you menat.

Onset Computer (maker of the HOBO) is the official Sensirion rep for
eastern US an Canada, and Sensolution is it for the western half.

http://www.sensolution.com

http://www.onsetcomp.com/Products/Product_Pages/Tattletale_pages/sensi
rion.html

If Peter Anderson has it for $25, I would go for that. The single
unit price from the factory rep is $22.

I recently updated my web page at
http://www.emesystems.com/OL2sht1x.htm
to show the '71 (which really does have marvelous flow-through
characteristics), and my encapsulated (slow) version for outdoor use.

I have run across one new precaution that I have not put on the web
page yet. Sensirion has just added this item to their FAQ and it is
not shown in their data sheet or app note. The clock line has to be
at a solid low level when the chip powers up, or else there is a
chance that it will enter a bad locked up state. For example, if you
have the SHTxx powered by the 5 volt Vdd of a Stamp, and have the
data line to a stamp pin with pullup and the clock line to a stamp
pin straight, then the clock line will come up floating when you
power up the stamp, and there is a chance that it will enter this
locked up state. The solution is to add a pulldown (not up!)
resistor to the SHTxx clock line, so that it will always start low.
Or, power the SHTxx from a Stamp pin, and make the clock pin low
before bringing the power high. The power for the SHTxx has to come
up clean and relatively fast.

I have hundreds of these out in the field now, connected as shown in
the data sheet without the pulldown resistor, and most of them have
worked without a hitch. The kicker is the 3 or 4 that have had
trouble and led to an exchange of email with Sensirion. That is
engineering for you.
