Any processor MUST have a 'clock' -- something
that oscillates and gives a periodic rising
and falling signal. This 'clock' is then used
to drive the switching of signals through the
processor.
However, this 'clock' does not have to be
synchronized to anything in the real world --
and in the case of the BS2, it isn't.
The BS2 has an on-module 'resonator' which
drives it. It provides an approximately
2000 Basic instructions per second run rate
for the BS2.
However, if you want a real 'Timer', which
you can syncronize to our wall-clock time,
you'll need a $5.00 DS1302 chip. This is an
'RTC' (real-time clock) chip, which knows
about hours, minutes, seconds, days, etc.
It uses a 32.686 KHz crystal to keep track
of wall-time.
